Eight Steps to a Springtime Yard Adventure
Preschoolers love adventures, and often adventures are as close as your own backyard. If spring is popping up all around you, answer the call of the sunshiny outdoors for a springtime yard adventure.
- Do Some Outdoor Spring Cleaning Enlist your preschooler to help with yard preparation for summer. Preschoolers love to help. With preschooler-sized gloves and yard tools they can truly help, and parent and preschooler enjoy a common goal of getting the yard ready for summer fun!
- Say Hi to Neighborhood Friends Neighborhood friends are an important part of the preschool years, and preschoolers feel independent as they gather to play with friends outdoors. Spring is the time to get re-acquainted with neighborhood preschool friends. A warm, spring day also gives parents the perfect chance to talk about outside play guidelines.
- Plant Some Seeds or Plants Preschoolers love to garden. Enjoy a special gardening activity by planting some flower or vegetable seeds or even some small plants.
- Wish for Rain Remember the saying that April showers bring May flowers? Rain is an important part of spring. As you finish planting your early spring garden, it is a perfect time to talk about what plants need to grow.
- Revisit Favorite Backyard Spots Where does your preschooler love to hang out? Perhaps he has a hide-away spot in the yard such as under a tree, on a porch swing, or at the side of the house.
- Have Fun on the Play Set Take advantage of the warm weather to swing on the backyard swing or zoom down the slide.
- Enjoy a Picnic Lunch or Snack Is it just too beautiful to come inside? Take a favorite snack or lunch outside. Preschoolers will enjoy taking a much needed break from the outside activity, and yet they will still be in the midst of the wonders of the day. As you eat, listen for the springtime sounds all around: birds chirping, dogs barking, someone running a mower, the sound of a rake cleaning another yard, children playing, and neighbors talking.
