Go Prepared
Dress for the weather. Layers can make changing temperature more tolerable. Bring needed physical items such as bathrooming needs, hand wipes, tissues, sun screen, bandages, and simple snacks. You may wish to have an extra outfit for your preschooler in the car.
Get a Good Night’s Rest
Preschoolers do best when the plan takes their needs into consideration. Planning a time to visit the zoo when your preschooler is rested is important. You will also want to consider if it will be a crowded time of the day.
Explain how long you plan to stay at the zoo. Let everyone pick one or two favorite animals to see. Many zoos are too large to cover in one visit.
Bring enough help. Going with a spouse, preschooler’s grandparent, or another preschool parent gives enough hands for safety, bathrooming, and snack or mealtime.
A short break to have a snack or a cool drink can re-energize preschooler and parent alike. If the zoo has a playground, preschoolers will appreciate the unstructured time.
Plan to Come Again
Remember to plan for your next zoo visit. By visiting one or two special animal early in the trip, you can focus with your preschooler on what you will see next time you visit the zoo.
